Mensans having fun at Denny’s in Bismarck

North Dakota has a very active Mensa group that received National Mensa’s Group of the Year Award (“GOTYA”) in both 2009 and 2011. In 2009 the group or its members received four major national awards. Member Karina Fabian received the Fiction Owl in 2007 for her ongoing contribution to the newsletter. The Owl is national Mensa’s highest award to a local group.

North Dakota Mensa has hosted eight successful Regional Gatherings at The President’s House, Valley City State University, and is planning its ninth for 2012.  Click here to read about the upcoming RG on June 8-10, 2012. Among other attractions, RG ’12 will include musical evening with the President’s House antique player piano, a potluck picnic at beautiful Chautauqua Park (weather permitting), and fireworks!

The group has regular meetings in Fargo/Moorhead, Dickinson, and Grand Forks and occasional meetings in Valley City, Bismarck, and other cities. Events are primarily publicized in the newsletter, but events that aren’t planned in time to make the next issue are listed on our calendar page at http://freecal.brownbearsw.com/NDMENSA. If you would like to attend a meeting, check the calendar page or email your nearest Area Coordinator (they are listed on the Officers and Contacts page).

Members also communicate through the group’s newsletter, the Prairie Dawg. The Dawg has included discussions about fighting terrorism, mock turtle soup, referenda, fairies, cats, Mensa gatherings, and Death Rain potato chips. The newsletter included the Owl-award winning serial set at the 2006 World Gathering, written especially for us by Karina Fabian and starring Vern the dragon, also know as Dragon Eye, P.I. The series has been published in book form by Swimming Kangaroo Press, and you can read the original Prairie Dawg version here.

North Dakota Mensa participates in the national Scholarship Program. For more information, see the contact page for the address of Scholarship Chair Gay Rawson.
