North Dakota Mensa Regional Gathering 2023 Logo

FoRGe North 2, North Dakota Mensa's 16th RG, was held August 11-13, 2023 in Grand Forks, at the Staybridge Suites.

We had over 20 attendees from eight states (ND, SD, MN, IL, MI, CO, TX and WA) including our Regional Vice Chair.

Summary

Friday afternoon we toured the Ralph Englestad Arena (REA), located on the UND campus. The REA has been called one of the finest facilities of its kind in the world. Former NHL hockey player Wayne Gretzky has called the structure "one of the most beautiful buildings we have in North Americaā€¯.

Friday evening the head of the UND atmospheric sciences department, Aaron Kennedy, gave a talk about the unique weather patterns in the Red River. Following dinner we headed to the Grape Mill Vineyard for a wine tasting. Overlooking the banks of the beautiful Red Lake River, the cold hardy grape vines produce a unique flavor specific to the region.

Saturday morning we had speakers on three topics. 1) Learning Gardens at UND -- a program that focuses on teaching environmental stewardship to all ages from preschool up to university. 2) UND Hopes -- Professor Ethan Dahl talked about UND Hopes, a rural suicide prevention program. 3) Cary Endres from the North Dakota traumatic brain injury network then gave a talk. After the speakers we visited the North Dakota Museum of Art (NDMOA) which is the official art museum of North Dakota. Located on the campus of the University of North Dakota (UND) the museum is a private not-for-profit institution.

Saturday afternoon we went to an escape room. Attendees were split into two groups. Groups worked together to solve a mystery contained within a room by searching, answering riddles/puzzles, and unlocking various things.

Saturday evening Mensa's very own Kenya Zarns hosted pub trivia. An evening that was both fun and challenging enough for our Mensa crowd ensued.

Our planned Sunday outdoor activities had to be cancelled due to rain, but hospitality at our hotel continued through the afternoon.
